New Music Release: Nobody Just Like You
Following a triumphant 2019 during which Human Nature were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), performed their 2000th show on the Las Vegas Strip, celebrated 30 years as a band as well as being inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, the unstoppable group are kicking off 2020 with the release of a brand new original single, ‘Nobody Just Like You’.
When asked whether this exciting announcement will take Human Nature fans by surprise, Mike Tierney considers, "We've mentioned it on and off, you know, 'There's new music coming,' but artists often say that and then nothing ends up coming out. Hopefully the fans will be pleasantly surprised."
‘Nobody Just Like You’ is the lead single from Human Nature's upcoming Good Good Life EP, which features five brand new original songs from the internationally acclaimed vocal group composed of Toby Allen, Phil Burton and brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney.
A love song for those in long-term relationships and the newly loved-up alike, ‘Nobody Just Like You’ celebrates uniqueness: it's what your significant other initially fell in love with and, over time, your individuality is also what will keep you together.
Built from a simple guitar riff, the organic pop production on Human Nature's latest single comes courtesy of Grey, the American duo responsible for producing three of this upcoming EP's five tracks. "The production the Grey guys brought to ‘Nobody Just Like You’ took it from a really great potential single to something with undeniable universal appeal," Andrew praises.
Percussive riffs, woozy synth parts, rim clicks and crisp finger snaps drift in and out of ‘Nobody Just Like You’'s arrangement with Human Nature'spristine vocals consistently remaining the focal point throughout.
Andrew recalls the lyrical twist that completely transformed this song: "It was actually called 'Somebody Just Like You' and as we were trying to massage the end of the chorus we flipped it to ‘Nobody Just Like You’, and that concept felt really great. I still listen to the chorus and wait for that lyric change every time."
Chorus lyrics: "I spend my life trying to find somebody just like you... But there's nobody just like you."
"I've become a huge fan of lyrics over the years," Andrew continues, "because I think the lyrics stay with you as much as the melody, and I never used to place as much importance on lyrics as I do now."
Although Andrew has exercised his passion for song writing consistently over the years - recently penning original tunes for Human Nature'sChristmas and JUKEBOX albums - his brother Mike stepped away from the process for a while. That is until the pair joined forces for some song writing sessions last year and immediately rediscovered their collaborative magic. "I started enjoying the whole song writing process again," Mikeenthuses. "We worked with some fantastic people as well. It was a great experience."
"It had been 15 years since we'd written a song together!" Andrew marvels. "Mike and I did a lot of the core writing for all of Human Nature'searly original albums and this new body of work started to take shape as soon as we started writing together again, so it's all come full circle."
"It's kind of how we started we first got our record deal," Mike observes. "Andrew and I were just writing at home in our bedroom at our Mum and Dad's house, then we hooked up with Paul Begaud who was a young writer/producer at the time. Getting back to writing together now, it just felt like we were writing for the joy of it, which is probably when the best songs come out."
"When Mike and I spoke about the direction we wanted these new Human Nature songs to take," Andrew explains, "we wanted it to be positive, uplifting pop with a deeper message underneath - to make people feel better about where they are and kind of lift them up."
"All these songs have a feel-good message in the music as well," Mike adds, "which I think can sometimes be lacking in pop music, and it just felt like that was the right space for us to be in."
Human Nature have been dominating the Las Vegas Strip for over a decade now thanks to their various Jukebox and Motown residencies. Other career highlights for the band include being invited to sing the national anthem during the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics - which attracted a global TV audience of 2.1 billion viewers - and securing support slots with global superstars Celine Dion and Michael Jackson, which happened very early on in their career.
Since signing to Sony Music Australia over two decades ago, Human Nature have released 13 studio albums (4 of which went to #1 in Australia), 15 Top 20 singles and 5 Top 10 hits worldwide. With album sales in excess of 2.5 million in Australia alone, the group's combined releases to date have been certified 26x Platinum.
So what made Human Nature decide that 2020 was the right time to release new original material? "I'm a big fan of what's happening in pop music right now," Andrew shares. "There seem to be actual songs out there as well as cool production stuff and it just feels like the right time in pop music for us to release original music. To feel like we can own the original music again is a nice place to be. In my heart I always knew that Human Nature would release original music again, I just didn't know when it would happen. I'm excited, really excited."
Eager to perform this fresh material in front of Australian audiences, Human Nature's Good Good Life Tour hits our shores for a run of 8 theatre shows this July.
